I think it's very hard for a no...Hi Steve! :o)<br /><br />I think it's very hard for a non-Thai person (especially of Western origin) to get in touch with Thai society and culture to the point where their knowledge is as good as a local's. <br /><br />There is a strong trend towards backpackers seeking 'the most off-the-beaten-path experience ever', which leads them to scorn places like Phuket, which are the darlings of luxury resorts, big companies, etc. While I can understand a desire to be away from the crowds and the commercialism which characterises so much of Western urban living, I personally enjoy meeting other foreigners as I travel. Besides, if a lot of other people are there, chances are you are onto a good thing!
